South Florida Cactus and Succulent Society

The South Florida Cactus & Succulent Society presented its 27th Annual Show & Sale at Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, in Miami-Dade County, in the United States on May 28-30, 2010. Pictures from the 28th, 29th and 30th Shows are now also included

Here are some photographs of the entries and a few of the participants. This year's event was both beautiful and successful; vendors and attending public were numerous, much to our delight.

The images and plant names were provided by Emy de la Fuente, our president. I cannot tell you much about the plants, but I could provide some information on the people on a few of the photographs.

Emy de la Fuente has served as president of the South Florida Cactus & Succulent Society on several occasions over the last twenty five years. Emy also has been editor for our quarterly, CereusChatter, for a number of years and does a great job at it.

Alfredo Bergolla is also a long-time member of SFCSS and an important South Florida collector of cacti and succulents. Alfredo's experience as a wholesale grower for several decades is a valuable resource to our society's events.

Barbara and Jim Daley are members and also vendors at our Annual Show & Sale. They specialize in raising Pachypodium lamerei and Jathropa podagrica from seed, always bringing in a good selection of plants. I am in a photograph with Barbara Daley, who is always an enthusiastic member of the SFCSS' Annual Show & Sale.

Impressive as some of the specimens may seem, it is not an easy proposition to try and grow most cacti and many succulents in South Florida to specimen, show-worthy size. Our rainy season is months long and plentiful; even without the rain, humidity is almost always high. Having a greenhouse or a covered area is essential, while maintaining a high level of sunlight on the plants for optimal growth. Some of us put a stretch of plastic cover over a growing area, or otherwise try to keep the plants dry enough, as they like it. Still, its a blessing to count with warm weather and plenty of sunlight from year to year, so we all glady work with our beloved 'C&S babies' to keep them happy.

Of course, that's what keeps us happy, too !
